Anyone else driven nuts by this??? - 8:52PM on 8/15/2009
Sorry to come on here and complain, but is anyone else driven crazy when major websites and programs spell theatre ER and not RE. I realize it's just a traditional spelling and the dictionary doesn't distinguish, but I just can't take a place that doesn't make that distinction seriously. Anyone else?

American english has changed many English word endings from "re" to "er" i.e. sabre to saber and centre to center. It is simply an americanized version of the word. Also, "er", I believe, most often refers to movie cinemas, and "re" refers mostly to plays and the buildings in which they are performed. Either way both are completely legit.
