Topic: New York Theatre Pulse

I am a graduate student outside of Chicago. I love Chicago theatre, some of the best in the country on a consistent basis. I will be graduating in 2010 and am constantly wondering where to go, what to do.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice or insights into what the New York scene is like these days. There are always rumors of "it's going downhill, stay away" but I am not there and don't really know.
Also, are there ways to hit the ground running, as opposed to having no idea what to do once in New York.
