News Article: Stain

This second-rate dysfunctional family drama is trite, tired, and too long.

Unfair... - 1:30PM on 8/07/2008
I saw this play the other night, and this review missed the mark. The cast & design are uniformally excellent. The director has adeptly tackled some seriously gut-wrenching subject matter, w/out alienating his audience.
The playwright has crafted a work that NEEDS to be seen. The audience was captivated the whole time - I could literally feel the charge in the air.
Nothing 2nd-rate about this play... its unapologetic, and it makes you think... oh, no! what will our lazy minds do??!?!

I think the reveals are far from "ho-hum" considering the audible gasps I heard and one lady next to me loudly whisper "Oh sweet Jesus!" Yes, probably to the "experienced" theatre reviewer might see whats coming, but the majority of real paying theatre goers are genuinely surprised.

Do I think this play is perfect? No. But I think its a challenging piece of theatre with a great cast, skilled direction from Scott C. Embler who I saw direct a wonderful production of a Fringe Show in 2004 "Burning Botticelli" and some INCREDIBLE and playfully written dialogue from Tony Glazer. Go see this NON TYPICAL play NOW!

i felt somewhat insulted as a theatre-goer with this obvious, over top, non-believable piece of work. Yes, the subject matter was brutal, but lacked the believeablity in writing and performance for such matters, shoving and contorting and pieced together in a non-truthful seeming manner. Sadly was unable to get out before the end. some of the dialogue, at supposedly most dramatic point was laughable and predictable.
